How we verify the numbers

  • Roster of record.Counts come directly from each state's official licensing authority (the rows you can look up). We never hardcode a headline number — every figure is computed from the ingested roster.
  • Reconciliation. Where an authority publishes its own total, we reconcile against it (e.g. a registered-attorney or active-attorney total). Where no single roster total is published, we verify against the ABA National Lawyer Population Survey (2024) resident-active count for that state, requiring our active-in-state figure to fall inside the published band.
  • Status, verbatim. License and disciplinary status strings (active, suspended, disbarred, etc.) are reproduced exactly as published. We report the record; we do not interpret it.
  • As-of dates. Every data page shows when its roster was last ingested. Records can change after that date — always confirm against the linked official source.
  • Court records are name matches.Federal court activity (where shown) reflects dockets whose counsel list includes a matching name in that state's federal courts — a name match, not a confirmed identity.

Where the data comes from

  • State bar & court rosters.Official attorney-registration and discipline records published by each state's licensing authority (listed in the table above).
  • Population benchmark. American Bar Association, National Lawyer Population Survey 2024 — used only to verify completeness, never displayed as an attorney's record.
  • Federal court activity. CourtListener / RECAP (Free Law Project) federal docket data, attributed by counsel name match.
